Week 5 DQ Government and politics

Q This week listen to this MPR program with Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and David Souter at the JFK Library that was broadcast on January 5, 2011 at http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/01/05/midday2/. Several issues are addressed by these former justices, including the importance of civic education to a democratic society, reforming state judicial elections, and their takes on some of the Supreme Court decisions since they left the court. In this discussion, you will hear these former justices talking about the New Child Left Behind Law; please note that this law has now been replaced with the 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to reflect modest increases in civics funding: https://www.usnews.com/opinion/knowledge-bank/articles/2015-12-17/the-every-student-succeeds-act-is-a-victory-for-civics-education. But there are important take-aways from this discussion that make it still very relevant today. In your discussion board responses, reflect on what they say about the need for civic education, the influence of money in judicial elections, and their suggestions to solve these problems. For a better understanding of the influence of money in state judicial elections, watch the Bill Moyers documentary, Justice for Sale: https://www.pbs.org/video/bill-moyers-the-journal-justice-for-sale/ Liz

Hearing O’Connor and Souter has really made my mind think that what has happened to education today. They mainly discuss the absence of the subjects related to civics and politics in school. We all know that a nation depends on young students to a great extent but if they have no basic knowledge about the government then it is difficult to expect anything from them and then we all complain that citizens are not participating in politics. Unless schools plant the ideas of government and its duties and role of citizens in the mind of the students, how can they be a part of politics in future. In fact, there are students who don’t even know the three branches of the government. Nor do they have knowledge about democracy and the works that needs to be done
